Nijo Castle

Built by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a residence when he went to Kyoto, Nijo Castle was the scene of the beginning and end of the Edo period and is one of Kyoto's representative world heritage sites. It was in this castle that Ieyasu's congratulatory ceremonies were held under the Shogunate, and Tokugawa Yoshinobu's transfered the power back to the Emperor was also held.
